"The Mossad’s pager operation on September 17 and 18, 2024, was a pivotal moment that tipped the scales, securing a major Israeli victory against Hezbollah. This operation ultimately contributed to the fall of Assad and the elimination of the Syrian army. It was a masterful combination of two distinct strategies.
A decade ago, Israel deceived Hezbollah into purchasing booby-trapped walkie-talkies. By 2022, however, Israel recognized that times had changed—most terrorists preferred smaller, body-worn devices. This realization sparked the pager operation. The first shipment of 500 explosive pagers reached Hezbollah weeks before October 7, 2023, while the walkie-talkies remained stored on Hezbollah’s shelves. Remarkably, by the time the pagers were detonated, Hezbollah had received and distributed thousands more.
On the eve of September 17, 2024, Hezbollah scrambled to switch to the walkie-talkies—a decision that proved providential. They unknowingly swapped one explosive device for another. Astonishingly, the total explosive material in all detonated devices was less than that of a single standard landmine. In essence, the equivalent of one landmine brought down Hezbollah and Assad’s regime.
Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered the operation’s execution, overriding objections from his defense minister and IDF chief of staff. These officials then leaked details to an Israeli journalist, who published a story in The New York Times that could have jeopardized the entire mission. Yet, through a series of miracles, the operation succeeded.
As Israel’s first Prime Minister and Zionist icon David Ben-Gurion once said, “In Israel, to be a realist, you must believe in miracles.” Amir Tsarfati.
