One night a few years ago, I was lying in my hospital bed recovering from a major surgery that I’d had that morning. I had received pain medication to see me through the night but was still suffering viscous pain. My faithful nurse ended her shift, lowered the lights in my room and wished me well, said I’d feel much better in the morning. I began to cry out to Jesus.
It seemed a long time but was only a few minutes when my night nurse stopped in to check on me. She was a replacement nurse, only there to fill in for the night, she said. I felt comforted immediately by her calm, comforting presence.
She told me that she had authority to administer some additional medication that hadn’t been tried yet and felt it might help me. She brought it quickly and it began to help me in only a few minutes. As the pain receded and I began to think more clearly again, I asked her if she often worked at this hospital. She said, no. She just happened to get a call to come and help out that night.
I remember telling her how grateful I was to have been given her to care for me for that night. She was so gentle and encouraging, her presence was competent and reassuring yet peaceful. She didn’t “glow” but I remember asking her if she was an angel. She just smiled, stood beside my bed while the pain lessened, talked about her work and how she loved being on call to help people in need. She smelled like flowers.
I thanked the Lord, fell asleep, and when I awoke, she had gone. She left instructions for the day nurse. The worst of the pain never returned, and I healed quickly.
I thanked God many times for sending her that night. I am convicted that He did. Was she an angel?? I believe it is quite possible. We are taught in Scripture that “we can entertain angels unaware”. Perhaps I did."
