I share this experience to encourage those who are praying for a loved one or a friend to come to Christ. Don’t give up hope, God is working beneath the surface. If we have given up, He does not. This is the true story of a family member I have been praying for for over 30 years. Recently, I gave up and gave my cousin over to God. Then, he came to dinner and before leaving, he shared a dream from that morning with me.
And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh…Your sons and your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. Joel 2:28.
In his dream, our cousin came to our house for a visit. The property was expansive and was in the mountains. He could actually smell the trees, the pine and evergreen trees.
In a gazebo located on the property was my husband (Bobby) and our friend Tony. He was teaching about and explaining a song. It was ‘Kid Charlemagne’ by Steely Dan. That was it.
As our cousin described the dream, my mind started reviewing the symbols and I got excited! Mountains indicate a high place, exalted and a place to meet God. Conversely, they can symbolize an obstacle and a challenge depending on the context.
Trees represent people in scripture and dreams. And, evergreen trees mean eternal life, because they stay green continuously, appearing to be everlasting. Evergreen = Eternal life; immortal. He could ‘literally’ smell the fragrance of the trees, he said!
For, we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 2 Corinthians 2:15.
Look at some of the words of the song ‘Kid Charlemagne’, they speak everlasting life though it is a secular song. Perhaps, the Lord is asking these questions of our cousin.
Could you live forever?
Could you see the day?
Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away?
More clues, my cousin told me his name Charles is actually derived from Charlemagne! “The popularity of the name in continental Europe was due to the fame of Charles the Great (742-814), commonly known as Charlemagne. He united most of Western and Central Europe and was the first recognized emperor to rule in the west after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Charlemagne spread Christianity and his profound impact on the Middle Ages and influence on the territory he ruled has led him to be called the "Father of Europe" by many historians and his name was adopted as a word meaning "KING".
Could ‘Kid Charlemagne’ represent Charles? Why? Because we must come to the kingdom of God as children, and He calls us His kids. Notice Charlemagne’s name was adopted as meaning "KING". Tony and Bobby are strong believers in Jesus. They were teaching him about Charlemagne, the KING! Teaching about the King of King’s, everlasting life, as Charles smelled the evergreens.
The same night I was told the dream, I got an email which referenced a flag titled,” An Appeal to Heaven”. Look at this, it has an evergreen tree on it!
I researched the flag. “The original Appeal to Heaven flag was introduced on the eve of the American Revolution. It was commissioned by George Washington to fly over the small Massachusetts navy in 1775. The phrase “an appeal to heaven” was a popular slogan of that era that originated in a treatise in which John Locke argued that citizens can only abide tyrannical governments for so long before they “appeal to heaven”—having exhausted every possible earthly appeal for justice.”
This secular description of the flag has a spiritual connotation to it. Note the evergreen tree ‘appealing to heaven’ for everlasting life. God uses the simple things that we see every day to speak to us. Just as Jesus did with the parables, He uses our life experiences to address us, approach and relate to us.
He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8.
God opened Charles’s eyes to the spiritual realm in the dream. He gave him a minds-eye picture and a call to everlasting life. Bobby and Tony will teach Charles the way! A simple, poignant meaning.
For God is greater than man. Why do you contend with Him? For He does not give an accounting of any of His words. For God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man does not perceive it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction. In order to turn man from his deed, and conceal pride from man, He keeps back his soul from the Pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. Job 33:12-18.
