I am happy to feature an example of God teaching someone how to speak in tongues. The following set of dreams were given to my sister Sherry in 1994 after she received Jesus as her Savior and the baptism of His Spirit. This experience of learning how to speak in tongues still fascinates me to this day and I am sure you too, will find it captivating! Here she is in her own words:
“I had a series of three dreams in a row, one in each of three nights. I was not interested in speaking in tongues, for me they seemed too weird and what I had heard before in a church scared me. But I allowed my mentors to pray for me that I might receive them as they insisted, I should have them.
The first night I remember seeing Jesus from His shoulders up pointing to His mouth with His right index finger. He said, “Watch Me”. So, in my dream, I watched. He spoke several words to me I didn’t understand. He repeated this for me twice. Then I woke up. I knew that He was trying to teach me the spiritual language He was giving to me. I got up and tried to write it down, phonetically of course.
The second night, the same thing happened. Jesus told me to watch Him as He mouthed the words, but this time, along with the words from the first night, He added a few more words to the group I had received the previous evening. I wrote these new words down adding them to the first group.
The third night’s dream was the same. Jesus mouthed the words He had given me in the two previous night’s dreams. Then He added more of these unusual words that together formed what seemed like a sentence.
After I wrote them down, I spoke them and practiced them every day. As I got comfortable speaking the words, the Lord added several more to what He had already given me. So, these altogether formed my speaking in a language I had never heard of before. This was my instruction on speaking in tongues.
The good news is I’m not fearful anymore of tongues as some have told me they are, and as I was. I control them just as much as I can control my regular speech. The only word I recognize is ABBA, Father or Daddy in Aramaic. I use my tongues normally only in my prayers.”
Thank you, Sherry for sharing your story. I am sure it will help and comfort those who may be afraid or uncomfortable about this gift.
