To keep with the postings on discerning the voice of God, a recent dream ‘drives’ home this point.  In the first scene of the dream, I was in the tail of a large passenger plane on a runway.  But what was funny was that I found myself sitting backwards facing the tail.

While I sat facing backward, I was looking into a side mirror trying to drive the plane forward.  I was looking over my right shoulder into the mirror but swerving and faltering, I got very frustrated.  There was a Man in the tail with me, silently watching.

The scene changed.  I was outside of the plane and the plane was in two pieces; the tail end and the front end where the Captain sits.  I was maneuvering the back end of the plane as one would move a bicycle around.

The same Man appeared and handled the nose or front of the plane.  He knew what He was doing.  He did not speak a word to me.  However, I instinctively knew to move my piece out of His way.  As I moved, the Man maneuvered the nose in place, which allowed me to put my tail in place.  Now, the head and the tail of the plane were together.

After prayer for the meaning, I heard in my head: “Leave the driving to Me.”

The obvious meaning of this dream is that the Pilot of my plane; the Driver of my life is the Lord.  The Man in both scenes was Jesus.  He must lead and I must follow.   If not, I struggle in my own strength to plan and drive the plane of my life.  And I drive it backwards meaning I can’t see what’s up ahead (and certainly can’t take off) unless I depend on God, my Captain and Pilot.

Looking at the symbols, a plane on a runway illustrates waiting to take off.  And if it’s in the air, flying in the Spirit.  A large plane can soar 40,000 feet high.  “Forty thousand emphasizes “wise rule.”  The Ultimate Guide to Understanding the Dreams You Dream: Milligan, Ira.

There is an additional meaning to this dream.  It speaks to me that even though I may not think I’m hearing the Lord (driving backwards), He makes His instructions known intuitively (silently).  There are times when God gives directions, but we don’t hear them in our ears.  Nevertheless, we know them instinctively.  In other words, He instructs our hearts.  He can bypass our ears (or our conscious thoughts) to give direction to our hearts.  He goes to the heart of the matter.

I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people.  (Jeremiah 31:33b).

Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.  (Isaiah 30:21).

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.  (Psalm 32:8).
